Daytona Beach, FL: Greyhound Pets of America

Hi everyone,
My name is Judy Shamp with Gold Coast Greyhound Adoptions of Orlando.  I would like to tell you what I have observed at GPA Daytona Beach.  Our group helps Chris Miller with cat testing and we take several of her dogs every month.  I became aware a few years ago that any Florida track is an emergency waiting to happen.  I have been taking dogs from Sanford Orlando Kennel Club and GPA Daytona for many years.   It is not just the tracks that are closing for the season but the tracks that continue all year long that constantly have high numbers of dogs waiting for adoption.  I think people forget about this because it doesn’t have a beginning or end that is announced.   Our volunteers just cat tested 99 greyhounds last Saturday and that is in addition to the greyhounds that were already on the list from the month before, minus the dogs that were gone because we couldn’t take them fast enough.    Right now, I am very worried about the Daytona dogs because they won’t be able to race at Pensacola or Ebro or anywhere else.  They are done, finished and waiting for homes too.  We are struggling at the ground level to get these dogs out of the race kennels and move them onward to other groups.  This is why I help Chris because her numbers are always somewhere between 200 – 250.  In addition, she just took four more broken legs this week.  More than half of her kennel is filled with dogs in various stages of recovery.   Please, as you consider helping other groups, also look towards the east and the dogs at the beach.  It is critical here too.  We need more groups to take dogs and if you can help by taking dogs or providing funds to move these dogs, we need the help now before more dogs disappear.  It is a terrible feeling to cat test each month and see more dogs missing from our lists.  Please e-mail Chris Miller at gpadaytona@cfl.rr.com or you can e-mail me at my address M_Shamp@yahoo.com.
